New MPQ Editor has been released, version 3.1.0.371. Please, post any features that work wrong, annoying features, tips for new features, or anything else related to MPQ Editor here. I was wondering if there are any MPQ editors for Mac, just like the one made by Ladik for Windows. All the patches stopped working which saddens me a lot, unfortunately now that I am a mac user I cannot manually fix them since there seems to be no tools available.

MPQ (Mo'PaQ, short forMike O'BrienPack, named after its creator), is an archivingfile format used inseveral of Blizzard Entertainment'sgames.

MPQs used in Blizzard's games generally contain a game's datafiles, including graphics, sounds, and level data. The format'scapabilities include compression, encryption, file segmentation,extensible file metadata, cryptographic signature and the abilityto store multiple versions of the same file for internationalization andplatform-specific differences. MPQ archives can use a variety ofcompression algorithms which may also be combined.

Fileindexing

In order to meet the requirements of speed generally demanded bya computer game, files are indexed in a hash table using a quick, low-collision hashing algorithm.The index of a specific file within the hash table is the hash ofthe uppercased filename modulo the size of the hash table, allowingfor quick verification of a file's existence within the archive. Ifmultiple files within the archive have the same hash, collidingentries will follow each other in increasing index order (forming acolliding hash cluster). In order to identify the exact entry forthe requested file within a colliding hash cluster, each hash tableentry stores 2 additional hashes of the uppercased filename, eachusing the same hashing algorithm but with a different seed value,as well as a locale code and platform code. The end of a collidinghash cluster is detected either by encountering an empty hash tableentry or by traversing the entire hash table (including the moduloloopback) back to the initial hash table index.

MPQ archives do not have specific structures to store metadatabeyond what is absolutely necessary to access archived files.Instead, the convention is to use regular files whose filename isenclosed by parentheses.

Below are known metadata files.

(listfile): Contains a list of the archive's files, onefilename per line. May or may not be exhaustive.
(signature): Contains the weak cryptographic signature of thearchive. This type of signature is deprecated.
(attributes): Contains extended file metadata. Currently knownattributes are file creation date, CRC32 checksum and MD5checksum.

Compression

In modern MPQ archives, each segment (or sector) of a file canbe compressed using a combination of compression algorithms. Aheader byte is prepended to every compressed sector to indicatewhich compressions were used. The order in which those compressorsare applied is hardcoded.

The following algorithms are currently in use by Blizzardgames:

PKZIP (licensed fromPKWARE). The first compression algorithm available.
Huffmantree compression combined with ADPCM 4:1 compression (both introduced inStarCraft). Latter algorithm is lossy and only suitable for raw PCMinput data.
zlib (introduced in WarcraftIII).
bzip2 (introduced in Worldof Warcraft).

Since there was only one compression algorithm available whenMPQs were first deployed in Diablo, those archives used a differentarchive file metadata flag to indicate compression and did not usea compression header byte.

WarcraftIII cinematics

Cutscene cinematics with the MPQ extension are included withWarcraft III and, despite the file extension, are not actual MPQfiles. Rather they are AVI files compressed with Blizzard's renamedMPEG-4codec, BLZ0 (which actually is DivX). These files are playable in ordinary mediaplayers, provided the proper codecs are installed. Blizzardprobably used the MPQ extension on those files to hide them fromplayers, who could have spoiled the game by seeing them out of thegameplay. Exif editor windows. DBC (WDBC) files are collections of data records used in World ofWarcraft's client-side database. They are found within the MPQfiles in the game. .DBC files organize the client-side informationnecessary to run the game correctly^[1]
